There is an afternoon in the American Southwest — somewhere between Santa Fe and a half-remembered dream — where the light turns the adobe walls the colour of warm bread and the shadows go deep teal and violet. Sue Averell has stood in that light and carried it back to her Sausalito studio in the very texture of her paint. Here, a low adobe cottage sits easy in the sun, its roofline rolling like a slow breath, a flowering tree rising behind it as though it has always grown exactly there and nowhere else. The purple blooms scattered through the canopy echo the deep plum of the arched doorway — small rhymes the painting makes to itself, the way a place makes sense of itself over time. Sage bushes crowd the base of the wall with cheerful stubbornness. The window's teal grid holds the blue of the sky inside it. White clouds, built up in thick polymer relief, drift across the canvas with the unhurried confidence of the desert at midday. Sue has painted cities that crackle, botanicals that bloom, landscapes from Thailand to the San Francisco Bay — but in this piece she finds the particular stillness of a place that has been lived in for a long time. It is a painting about shelter, warmth, and the quiet beauty of a life rooted somewhere beautiful.
