Someone has pulled up a chair, set flowers on the table, and left a letter open — as if they stepped away for just a moment and will return to finish reading. The city that gave Sue Averell 'constant energy' from the day she arrived in 1997 is right there, framed like a painting within the painting. But it is the flowers that hold you. Averell has painted botanicals alongside her city scenes since her earliest North Beach Gallery shows, and here the two worlds finally sit at the same table. The bouquet — daisy-white, cornflower-blue, rose-red, sunflower-gold — is painted with the same loaded knife strokes she has refined across decades, each bloom built up in ridges of acrylic and polymer that feel almost sculptural.
